Christmas in LA: What To Do This Holiday Season

Diane Steinbach - Thursday, December 4, 2008

Some people need snow to have a great Holiday season, but in LA, there’s plenty to make the season merry without the white stuff. Whether it’s the nostalgic sound of carolers or thousands of Christmas lights blinking you into a hypnotic state, Los Angeles offers its community plenty to get them into the Christmas spirit.

For the Water Lover

Head out to Newport Beach for their annual Christmas Boat Parade. You’ll enjoy yachts, kayaks and canoes all dressed up for the holiday season as they drift down the waterfront. Millions come out to watch, so get there early.

For the Ice Lover

Check out the ice rink for some traditional figure 8’s or clumsily skated laps hand in hand with your special someone. Find your way to the Seaside Lagoon at Redondo Beach and don’t forget your mittens!

Fun on Wheels

Through December 25th you can tour around Beverly Hills on a decked out Trolley. Not only do you get to see some of the famous landmarks around town, but you’ll also enjoy traditional carolers and other holiday festivities while you ride. Only Saturdays and Sundays unfortunately so plan ahead. Pick up the trolley at Rodeo Drive and Wilshire Boulevard.

Light’em if You Got’em

Through December 30th you can enjoy the lights in Griffin Park by car, bike or tour on your own two feet. Go Monday through Thursday to avoid the long lines and congestion or take the free Zoo shuttle. Easiest of all, walk by following the footpath along Crystal Springs Drive.

While you’re in the mood for bright lights in this big city, check out Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena’s Santa Rosa Avenue. A tradition for over 80 years, these cedar trees are decorated in festive attire. Again, weekday tours are best to avoid huge crowds; you can get there by taking the Fair Oaks Exit off the 134 freeway and head north to Woodbury. Turn right on Woodbury and then left on Santa Rosa Avenue.
