Rescuing Your New L.A. Pet
Once you’ve settled in to your new life in Los Angeles, you may begin to miss things from back home. Perhaps it’s Mom’s cooking or snowy winters. Perhaps you miss the relaxed lifestyle of your small town, or the lower cost of living. But for many people, the longing for a pet quickly sets in as they begin to ask, “Can I really have a pet in this city?”
While not everyone’s L.A. lifestyle is suitable for pet ownership, it is indeed possible to have a pet in Los Angeles. If you’re one of the lucky ready to adopt a new member of your family, Survive the City has the information you’ll need.
Shelters Vs. Rescues
When it comes time to pick a pet, many people wonder whether they should select a new fluffy friend from the pound, or utilize the services of a rescue. Approximately 70,000 puppies and kittens are born every day in the U.S. and between four and six million are euthanized every year because they are homeless. So whether you get your pet from a rescue or directly from the pound, you are doing a good thing, but there are a few things to consider when making your decision.

Celebrity Pet Comunicator, Melissa Bacelar
At first site, many turn to the pound because they feel they are saving the life of an animal, and saving the expenses that sometimes occur with adopting from a rescue (fees can range from $150-$500 depending). Know that pet rescues find many of their adoptable animals from the pound, rescue them from the streets, or take them in from potentially harmful situations. Pound pups and kittens similarly are found, dropped off or brought in and come from a variety of backgrounds.
“The fact is many first-time pet owners don’t know what they’re getting in to with a pup from the pound,” explained Celebrity Pet Communicator, Melissa Bacelar. Melissa possesses the gift of animal communication and is able to help owners communicate with their pets in times of discourse and struggle. She is also very active in the pet rescue community.
“Animals from shelters have been through a lot and often have social, behavioral and emotional issues,” Melissa explained. “If you adopt from a rescue, the rescue has already gone in to the pound, saved the dog or cat, placed it with a foster parent who is then able to care for the animal and work out many of these issues. When the pet arrives at your home, at the very least you’ll have a list of the possible issues you may be facing.”
Animal rescues also assist by taking care of the necessary vaccines and the spaying/neutering that is required in Los Angeles. Adopting a pet that is spayed or neutered or having your pet spayed or neutered as soon as possible will greatly change the overpopulation of unwanted pets in years to come. So be like Bob Barker and spread the word!
Finding Your Dream Pet
I must say that this Survivor was very picky when it came to finding her new pup. I
searched petfinder.com for many weeks and visited a few pounds before even venturing out to weekend adoptions held by many of the pet rescues. I wanted something
specific – a shepherd, boxer and/or lab mutt that would quickly become my hiking companion.
When I met Linzi Glass of The Forgotten Dog at a rescue in the Padific Palasades one weekend, I knew she knew her stuff right off the bat. She was firm and particular about who would be adopting the animals under her care, yet fully concerned about finding homes for each of them. I let her know exactly what I was looking for and a few days later I had an email about a pup who had been neglected by its current owners. He was perfect and I knew it as soon as I saw his picture in the email. A few days later I was the proud owner of Berkeley and we’ve been in love ever since.
Linzi maintains her relationship with foster parents and owners; she even met me at the Vet the day Berkeley was neutered and sent him an email card on his birthday. In May of 2010, Linzi released her latest book “Finding Danny,” a children’s novel that enlightens and inspires readers everywhere to adopt.
While there are many of rescues to choose from, the best way to know which one you want to go with is to visit their weekend adopts which you can find out about by going to petfinder.com and then visiting the websites of the individual rescues.
If you want to visit the pound, Los Angeles Animal Services will provide you with locations, a list of adoptable pets and a lot of other important information you will need to know when it is time to adopt your new companion.

I’m not sure I get why so many people are making such a big deal over Drew’s ability. I happen to prefer Bob, but both are just great stars and we should be happy we got to see both of them star.
