The Search for Love Online

Expert Tips for Dating Via the Internet

Online dating is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. It’s even bigger than porn. Why? Because it works! However, if you don’t know some tricks of the trade, it’s easy to get lost in the virtual crowd – especially in major cities like La La and the Big Apple. So we asked online dating coach and founder of eFlirt Expert, Laurie Davis, for her top 5 tips.

Online dating tips from the eFlirt Expert, Laurie Davis.

1. Stay focused – “It’s easy for people in major cities to get caught up with what’s going on around them – openings, work, events – that they can lose focus of their dating lives,” she said. So to be successful, you have to make a real effort to log on regularly. The more active you are, the higher you’ll rank in searches and the more matches you’ll get.

2. Get specific – Major dating sites like Match and eHarmony are even better in major cities, but niche sites are great add-ons. So while it’s important to belong to one of the big guys, don’t be afraid to belong to a more specific site that will have a smaller crowd with a similar interest (such as Green Friends for vegetarians or Cupidtino for Mac lovers). There are also city-specific sites like MetroDate for L.A. and NYC And Love for New York that have a very active, local crowd.

3. Use apps – It’s great to go even further than niche sites and use dating apps on your smartphone. “You can manage your entire single life on the go. In fact, if you haven’t been using it to manage your love life yet, you’re only making things harder for yourself,” Davis said. You can read her entire guide to mobile dating apps here.

4. Get offline faster – People in major cities aren’t afraid to meet up sooner. These days, most daters don’t even ask for a phone call before a date. So don’t waste time! If you think there could be a connection there, go in for the meet up. Ladies – this means you too!

5. Get to the point – Because there are so many more dating profiles to choose from in major cities, yours has to be especially original. So you need to sum up who you are in a fun, quick way or your potential Mr. or Mrs. Right will be on to the next page. This can be daunting to some people, so that’s why Davis offers a service called an “eMakeover” where she writes the whole thing for you in a personal, honest way.

The bottom line is the more you put into online dating, the more you’ll get out of it. So don’t be afraid to jump in head first and eFlirt your way to success! – Jessica Hartman

After publishing this as the main article for the week of July 26th, we received this email:

    Heather,

… are you a single woman looking for a date? I’m a single successful guy working in media and looking for a girlfriend or even more. Tell me more about yourself first and your picture.

Maybe online dating still is a little creepy.
